A hero is one who has notable courage and ability. He is admired for his plucky deeds and noble qualities. To us, heroes are basically people who had achieved what they want, regardless of their numerous obstacles or ridicule from the public. Of course, what the heroes do should be a good cause that benefits the citizens. It is not easy to be a hero, because not everyone will support or understand what he wants to do.
Take for instance Lim Chin Siong. He formed the Communist Party so as to go against Mr Lee Kuan Yew's PAP group because he does not agree with what they are doing. Lim Chin Siong did that just simply because he thought it was all for the best for the people in Singapore. Just as Mr S.Rajaratnam put "I had good regard for him. He was a dedicated politician, but questionable because he was left-wing. He never did anything stupid or incorrigible and never did anything for money, and in that way, he was clean."
Although he was caught by Lee Kuan Yew in the end, he persevered all the way for his beliefs. His perseverance was so commendable that even Lee Kuan Yew admitted "I liked and respected him for his simple lifestyle and his selflessness. He did not seek financial gain or political glory. He was totally committed to the advancement of his cause. He and many of his comrades, graduates from the Chinese middle schools, taught my colleagues and me the meaning of dedication to a cause." This declaration can be enough proof that Lim Chin Siong's efforts did not go to waste and was widely acknowledged.

ReplyDeleteGROUP 4’S RESPONSE TO GROUP 5.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, we strongly disagree to the specific inference of Lee’s party as a Communist group as it degrades the respective hero’s pride and struggle for his cause. Lim’s party, Barisan Socialis, (the party he formed after he parted from the PAP) was painted as a radical pro-Communist party by Lee Kuan Yew still lacks promising evidence till this day. With new archives opened up in London, evidence linking Lim Chin Siong and Barisan Sosialis to be communist seems vague at best. In addition, the reaffirmation by Chin Peng, the leader of the MCP, stated that the Malaya Communist Party had never controlled and manipulated Lim Chin Siong and Barisan Sosialis as Lee had accused.
When Operation Coldstore is conducted by the ISD (Internal Security Department of Singapore), many influential politicians of BS were arrested and served detention without trial for many years. They were alleged to be involved in subversive activities aiming to establish a "Communist Cuba" in Singapore.
With the view of internationalism, we thereby equally hold the same stand as the U.S. State Department of perceiving the continued existence of ISA (Internal Security Act) is restricting political opposition and criticism of the government for this case.
In our ultimate conclusion, we felt that the definite inference of Lee’s party, Barisan Sosialis, by Group 5, as a Communist party is one-sided, in support of the founding father of PAP, Lee Kuan Yew’s assumption that may previously harness political agenda. Labeling his party as a Communist group is a great insult to the hero’s stand as mentioned below.
Four years later after his depression and suicidal attempt in 1965, he penned a letter to his former comrade-turned-arch-enemy, and capitulated, saying that he had "finally come to the conclusion to give up politics for good" and still strongly holds his stand of denial in support of the "international communist movement."
Your group can also improve by specifying over-generalised statements such as “He formed the Communist Party so as to go against Mr Lee Kuan Yew's PAP group because he does not agree with what they are doing.” And “he persevered all the way for his beliefs.” For example, you can state that Lim’s party did not want a merger with Malaya as opposed to Lee’s party decision due to political consequences. While you can also state how he and his party persevere under the face of adversity when many of its members including Lim himself were arrested and served detention without trial by the ISD.

ReplyDeleteHowever, we will like to praise the good use of quotes to prove that Lim Chin Siong is indeed a hero. The quotes mentioned came from people who held or holds highly regarded social status including the ones who had actually work closely or been involve in Lim, have collectively added to the reliability of the qualities that was mention of Lim. This could greatly enhance the fact that Lim befits the role of a hero having noble qualities that was previously defined.
ReplyDeleteWhy?
MM Lee and Lim were both the founding fathers of PAP, although Lim had left PAP to set up the opposition party, it can be inferred that they had work closely together during those days. The quote that was revealed dated back to years after the arrests of Mr Lim. This means that despite the fact that they were political enemies, MM Lee appraised and commended him for his dedication to his cause and selflessness, this set of reasoning and evidence could thus provide at least a passable reliability, to Mr Lim’s qualities.
The way your group had defined a hero had perhaps comforted the conventional thinking of a hero and had reflected the status of being a hero from another angle of light by redefining a hero for qualities and beliefs and not merely his/her achievements. This had proved to be a good effort. Keep this up!
