A hero can be found in each war as their patriotism stand the test of time. He would be someone who fights for what are right for the people and is able to sacrifice himself for the protection of others. Such a hero emerged in Singapore during World War 2 and he was none other than Lim Bo Seng who was respected for his integrity and courage till today.
Lim Bo Seng as a native Chinese, led efforts to raise funds to aid China in fighting the Japanese who invaded. Not only was he an Anti-Japanese resistance fighter, he was also involved in the activities of Force 136 as a member. Force 136 was a secret organization established in June 1942 to train secret agents from China and India to gather military intelligence so as to aid the British in their plan to overthrow the Japanese. Unfortunately, the existence of Force 136 was revealed under circumstances whereby the Japanese caught and interrogated one of the members. The Japanese then captured Lim Bo Seng to pry details about Force 136. Despite being subjected to severe torture, he refused to provide any information and protested against ill treatment of his comrades who were also in prison. Eventually, he died in captivity, ill and bedridden. In spite of the long term torture, he did not surrender or relent.
He was fearless, undaunted and most importantly, a patriot who would stand by his comrades. He contributed towards his country selflessly even if it meant an eventual painful death for him. This was a heroic deed that went down in the history of Singapore.

I would very much agree to group 1's point of view of agreeing that Lim Bo Seng is a true hero in the war.
ReplyDeleteLim Bo Seng is the national icon in the singapore history as he sacrificed his life for the nation.
Lim Bo Seng was betrayed by one of his friends and he was caught by the Japanse. The Japanese tried to force him to cooperate with them and provide them with information of Force 136 by torturing he but he refused to betray his friends and his country. They even got his friends in Singapore to come over to persuade him, but he was not moved. His willingness to sacifice for the country and for the safety of others proves that he is truely a hero to singapore.
Also Lim Bo Seng refused to receive any food or medical tretment from the japanse even when he was sick or hungry.Mr Lim protested against the ill-treatment of prisoners-of-war by refusing food from the japanse. He asked the warders to distribute his portion of sweet potatoes to the rest of his comrades.Even when his life was hanging by a thread,he still showed concern for his comrades by giving them his food. His warders were deeply touched by his nobleness and kept pleading with him to eat. However, he did not eat.
Lim Bo Seng was later struck by disease but he refused medical treatment from the japanse to protest their il-treatment to the war-prisoners. A few days later, Mr Lim was bundled up in an old blanket and left without food or water in an empty room meant for dying prisoners. He then died after struggling for his life for 3 days.
Lim Bo Seng's selflessness and his willingness to sacifice for the nation touched many and thus he is still regarded as a national icon up till tiday. He ,oved singapore and malaysia with his whole heart and was prepared to even sacifice his life for them to win and save back the country. He is indeed a great man and true hero to singapore.
Our group strongly agree with group 1's hero definition "A hero can be found in each war as their patriotism stand the test of time". We would also like to compliment them, as they have explained the meaning of their hero definition in the essay.
ReplyDeleteThroughout their essay, the good deeds of Lim Bo Seng are all accurate and right. They've also made an effort to use evidences which will link to their definition of a true hero.
As quoted from their essay, "despite being subjected to severe torture, he refused to provide any information" This evidence clearly shows that Lim Bo Seng sacrificed himself for the protection of others. Also from group 1's essay, "protested against ill treatment of his comrades who were also in prison". This sentence could clearly show that Lim Bo Seng is also a true hero who fights for his rights.
However, we felt that there are some flaws in group 1's essay and they could have done better. They could have quoted other people's comments on Lim Bo Seng, and try to link their evidences back to their definition of hero.
In conclusion, we felt that group 1 should be commended on their great efforts.
